The sighting of the crescent moon has officially begun Ramadan in Kashmir. Thousands gathered for Taraweeh prayers at landmark sites like Hazratbal and Jama Masjid, marking the start of a month dedicated to fasting, faith, and spiritual discipline.

With the sighting of the crescent moon, the holy month of Ramdhan has begun across Kashmir, ushering in a period of fasting, prayer and deep spiritual reflection. From the serene premises of Hazratbal Shrine to the historic congregation at Jama Masjid Srinagar, thousands gathered on the first night for Taraweeh prayers, marking the beginning of a sacred journey of faith and self-discipline. The first day of Ramdhan carries a unique emotional and spiritual significance. It is a day of intention, when hearts turn inward, routines change, and a renewed commitment to righteousness is made. The pre-dawn meal of Sehri, taken in quiet homes across the Valley, symbolizes preparation not only for physical fasting but for moral restraint and spiritual growth. As the first fast is observed, Kashmir collectively steps into a month that demands patience, humility and compassion. In a region that has witnessed decades of uncertainty and hardship, Ramdhan arrives as a source of solace and resilience. The discipline of fasting from dawn to dusk fosters empathy for those who struggle daily with poverty and deprivation. It reminds the privileged of their responsibility towards the less fortunate. Acts of charity begin quietly from the very first day, with neighbors sharing food and community members extending support to families in need. However, the beginning of this holy month also places responsibility on civil administration and market regulators. Price stability of essential commodities, uninterrupted electricity during Sehri and Iftar hours, and adequate public services are crucial during Ramdhan. The sanctity of the month should not be overshadowed by avoidable hardships. Authorities must ensure that profiteering and hoarding are firmly checked so that the spirit of compassion is reflected not just in sermons but in governance. Religious leaders, too, have a defining role as the month commences. The first Friday sermon of Ramdhan traditionally sets the tone for the weeks ahead. Messages from pulpits should emphasize unity, moral reform and social responsibility. At a time when society grapples with issues such as substance abuse, unemployment and social discord, Ramdhan provides a powerful platform for introspection and collective improvement.

“Ramadan in the Valley transcends physical fasting, serving as a period of spiritual renewal and communal unity. It is a time for Kashmiris to rediscover their shared identity through faith and compassion, emphasizing that the month’s success depends on the sincere adoption of these core values from the very first day.”

For the youth of Kashmir, the first day of fasting often becomes a moment of personal resolve. Many choose this month to strengthen their connection with faith, detach from negative influences and cultivate discipline. Mosques and community centers can serve as spaces for positive engagement, dialogue and guidance, ensuring that the spiritual energy of Ramdhan translates into constructive social change. The beginning of Ramdhan is not merely the start of abstinence from food and drink; it is the opening of a spiritual chapter for the Valley. In the calm of early mornings and the unity of evening prayers, Kashmir rediscovers its shared identity rooted in faith and compassion. As the first fast is observed today, the message is clear: Ramdhan is a month of renewal — of character, community and conscience. Its true success will lie in how sincerely its values are embraced from this very first day.
