Srinagar : Paras Health Srinagar has launched Kashmir’s first Comprehensive Breast Cancer Care Program in the private sector, integrating advanced surgical treatments, rehabilitation, and psychological support.
The initiative aims to provide women diagnosed with breast cancer in Kashmir with complete, coordinated, and evidence-based care, significantly reducing the need for travel outside the region for specialized treatment. Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women in Jammu & Kashmir, with a steady increase in cases over the past five years, highlighting the urgent need for accessible breast cancer services. Official statistics indicate a rise in recorded cases from 908 in 2021 to 938 projected for 2025, reflecting a growing disease burden in the region. Previously, many patients faced delays and financial strain while seeking advanced care outside the Valley. Dr. Shabnam Bashir, the Program Director, emphasized the importance of comprehensive care that extends beyond surgery, focusing on precision, rehabilitation, and long-term follow-up. Dr. Murtuza Habib, Facility Director, noted the program’s integration of advanced technology and multidisciplinary expertise to ensure that local patients receive treatment comparable to that in larger metropolitan centers. A significant feature of the program is the introduction of fluorescence-guided breast surgery, which enhances surgical precision and reduces the likelihood of repeat surgeries. The center will also offer oncoplastic breast conservation procedures, allowing women with larger tumors to preserve their breasts while ensuring oncological safety. Additionally, the facility has established a Lymphedema Prevention and Breast Rehabilitation Unit to address long-term complications post-surgery. The program includes onco-nutrition support, pain management, palliative care, and psychological counseling for patients and their families. Each case will be managed by a multidisciplinary team to ensure personalized and evidence-based treatment planning. Through this initiative, Paras Health Srinagar aims to set a new standard in breast cancer care in Kashmir.
