Srinagar : On the occasion of Radio Day President Jammu & Kashmir National Conference Dr Farooq Abdullah paid rich tributes to the enduring legacy of All India Radio Srinagar formerly known as Radio Kashmir for its invaluable role in preserving and promoting the region’s cultural and pluralistic heritage.
In a statement issued here on Friday Dr. Farooq reflected on the historic beginnings of radio broadcasting in Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting that its inaugural transmission featured a recitation of the Holy Quran by Madar-e-Meharban Begum Akbar Jehan Abdullah. He emphasized that this first broadcast symbolized a message of faith, unity, and hope that resonated throughout the Valley. He noted the evolution of radio in the region, stating that it has developed a significant legacy of artistic expression and cultural milestones over the decades. Radio has played a crucial role in celebrating local traditions, providing a platform for emerging artists, and keeping the community informed about both regional and global events, thereby shaping the cultural landscape of Kashmir. Dr. Farooq acknowledged the medium’s adaptability to changing times and its potential for further alignment with contemporary aspirations and technological advancements. He extended his congratulations to the team at AIR Srinagar, paying tribute to the dedication and creativity of its broadcasters, newsreaders, producers, technicians, and staff, which have contributed to its status as a cherished institution. He asserted that radio transcends mere communication; it embodies the heartbeat of collective memory and serves as the voice of a shared historical identity.
