Jammu: The Legislative Assembly Thursday passed the grants amounting Rs. 5,29,842.67 lakh for Public Works, Rs. 86, 615.70 lakh for Industries and Commerce, Rs. 28, 526.22 lakh for Labour and Employment, Rs. 19,881.72 lakh for Skill Development and Rs. 6,492.81 lakh for Mining Departments through a voice vote. The grants were passed after daylong debate and discussion by the Members in the House.
Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary expressed gratitude for the feedback received on project implementation and emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing the road network in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) to foster socio-economic growth. The administration, under Omar Abdullah, is focused on improving infrastructure, particularly in the Industries & Commerce sector, to attract investment and support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Initiatives like Mission YUVA aim to promote entrepreneurship and employment opportunities. The Deputy Chief Minister highlighted the importance of a robust road network, given the region’s challenging topography, and noted that over 40,000 km of roads have been developed to improve connectivity. He mentioned that 18 major projects are underway, with significant progress in completing long-pending infrastructure projects, including bridges that enhance access to remote areas and bolster defense capabilities. In terms of financial investments, the Deputy Chief Minister reported that 1,145 NABARD projects worth ₹5,245 crore have been sanctioned, with many completed or ongoing. The government is also addressing infrastructure damage caused by unprecedented rainfall in August 2025, with plans for restoration and significant funding requests submitted. The Deputy Chief Minister outlined achievements in the Industries and Commerce sector, including record investment realizations and a focus on easing business operations. J&K has seen a substantial increase in registered startups, particularly women-led initiatives, and has received national recognition for its business reforms. The handloom and handicraft sectors have also thrived, with financial support for artisans. In the Mining sector, the government is prioritizing sustainable resource management and has implemented digital reforms to enhance transparency and efficiency. The Deputy Chief Minister emphasized the importance of responsible mining practices and the need for a transparent mineral revenue system. Lastly, the Labour and Employment department is committed to safeguarding workers’ interests and promoting entrepreneurship through initiatives like Mission YUVA. The government has registered millions of unorganized workers and is focused on improving living conditions for laborers while creating substantial employment opportunities for the youth in the region.
