SWD Shopian organises Awareness Progs under Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana

Shopian : Social Welfare Department (SWD) Shopian Tuesday organized a significant awareness-cum-sensitization program at the Tehsil Social Welfare Sub-Office, Chitragam and BDO Office Hermain.
The events, held under the aegis of the Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY), aimed to educate the elderly about their legal rights and the various welfare schemes available to them.
Speaking on the occasion, department officials provided detailed insights into the maintenance and welfare of Parents and senior citizens (MWPSC) Act, 2007 and other welfare schemes available for Sr citizens. They highlighted that the Act makes it a legal obligation for children and heirs to provide maintenance to senior citizens, ensuring they lead a life of dignity and respect.
The participants were informed that the Act provides an inexpensive and speedy procedure to claim a monthly allowance through special tribunals. The officials emphasized the importance of the Elderline (14567), a national helpline providing free guidance and emotional support to the elderly.
The programs witnessed active participation from a large number of senior citizens and panchayat personnel.
