First major deep-water container transshipment hub showcased to Srinagar journalists

Srinagar : A press delegation from Srinagar visited the Vizhinjam International Transshipment Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport in Kerala, a significant maritime infrastructure project developed by Adani Ports. Inaugurated in May 2025, the port serves as India’s first major deep-water container transshipment hub, aimed at enhancing the country’s role in global maritime trade.
Speaking on the occasion Pradeep Jayaraman, CEO of Adani Vizhinjam Port, emphasized the port’s strategic importance in reducing reliance on foreign ports for container handling and improving logistical efficiencies. The port features advanced infrastructure, including modern quay cranes and integrated digital systems, which facilitate efficient cargo operations. Its geographic advantages, such as natural depth and proximity to international shipping lanes, support seamless transshipment. The port is designed for multimodal connectivity, linking maritime operations with hinterland transportation networks to optimize goods movement. Jayaraman highlighted the economic benefits of the port, including job creation and regional development, and noted the inclusion of India’s first female crane operator as a testament to the port’s commitment to inclusivity and skill development. The Vehicle Traffic Management System, developed by a startup from IIT Madras, showcases the integration of indigenous innovation in large-scale infrastructure. During the visit, the delegation observed various operational areas, including the container yard and advanced remote monitoring systems, reflecting the port’s high level of automation. With a planned handling capacity of 1.5 million containers annually, Vizhinjam Port has already managed around 740 vessels, including some of the largest container ships globally. The port also features the largest breakwater wall in India, enhancing operational safety. The emphasis on automation is complemented by initiatives for upskilling personnel in advanced technologies, ensuring dignified employment and career opportunities. A dedicated training institute at the port focuses on capacity building, including programs for local women and promoting organic farming practices. This visit is part of a five-day media outreach program organized by the Press Information Bureau, aimed at providing journalists with insights into key national infrastructure projects and government initiatives.
