Jammu: The discussion on Motion of Thanks on Lieutenant Governor’s Address commenced in Legislative Assembly Tuesday.
The motion was moved by MLA Showkat Hussain Ganie and seconded by MLA Dr. Rameshwar Singh.
Showkat Hussain Ganie initiated the debate by highlighting that over 7,000 people have been employed since Omar Abdullah took office, with an additional 23,000 in the recruitment process. He acknowledged the initial struggles of the tourism sector but noted a significant recovery, with over two crore tourists visiting the region, thanks to government efforts. Ganie emphasized infrastructure development, mentioning major projects like the Sonamarg Tunnel and the Shopian–Surankote National Highway, aimed at enhancing connectivity and economic activity. He also pointed out key welfare measures, such as free ration schemes and increased old-age pensions, aligning with election manifesto commitments. Rameshwar Singh supported the motion, praising the government’s achievements in education, health, and rural infrastructure while expressing concern over rising substance abuse in the Union Territory. He stressed the need for collective efforts to ensure unity and progress in Jammu and Kashmir. Mohammad Yousuf Rather (Tarigami) called for a dedicated climate fund for the region to address climate-related challenges effectively. Sham Lal Sharma highlighted the need for improved power supply and completion of water supply schemes, urging the creation of more employment opportunities for the youth. Ghulam Ahmad Mir advocated for increased government efforts towards restoring statehood and finalizing business rules for smoother governance. Ajaz Ahmad Jan mentioned that pre-budget meetings with stakeholders were held to ensure the upcoming budget reflects public aspirations. Arjun Singh Raju noted significant developmental strides in various sectors, particularly in Ramban district. Baldev Raj Sharma and Rafiq Ahmad Naik raised constituency-specific issues during the debate, with Naik commending the Chief Minister’s pre-budget consultations as a positive step for development. Salman Ali Sagar praised the Omar Abdullah-led government for its focus on socio-economic upliftment and holistic development. Shakti Raj Parihar urged attention to the development of Chenab Valley, while Pirzada Farooq Ahmad Shah credited the government for the revival of the tourism sector through active participation in conferences across India. Nizam-ud-din Bhat discussed legislative privileges and constituency issues, and Payare Lal Sharma expressed gratitude for government investments in electricity infrastructure and improvements in education and health services. Hasnain Masoodi commended the government’s sustainable development efforts and the establishment of a transparent public grievances redressal system. Devinder Kumal Manyal raised concerns about upgrading facilities in tourist and religious sites.
