Regional Pride: J&K Artist Becomes Sole Recipient of National Ministry of Culture Fellowship
SRINAGAR: In a significant recognition of Jammu & Kashmir’s rich artistic heritage, the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, has approved the prestigious Tagore Research Scholarship for renowned theatre personality Mushtaaque Ali Ahmad Khan.
The announcement distinguishes Khan as the only scholar from Jammu & Kashmir to be selected this year, placing him among an elite group of 35 researchers chosen from across the nation.
Documenting Seven Decades of Creative Resilience
Mr. Khan’s research project, titled “Kashmiri Theatre – An In-Depth Study Since Independence,” is set to provide a comprehensive analysis of the region’s performing arts over the last 70 years. The study aims to:
-
Trace the evolution of local theatre from its traditional roots to modern adaptations.
-
Examine the resilience of the medium amidst decades of social and political transformation.
-
Situate Kashmiri traditions within the broader context of the Indian performing arts landscape.
A Catalyst for Cultural Scholarship
The Tagore Research Scholarship is widely regarded as one of the country’s most respected fellowships. It is specifically designed to foster advanced inquiry into literature, cultural studies, and the performing arts.
By awarding this fellowship to Khan, the Ministry of Culture acknowledges the critical need to document and preserve the unique identity of Kashmiri theatre. His selection is expected to bridge the gap between regional artistic history and national academic discourse, offering a roadmap for future generations of artists and researchers.
