Shopian : District Administration Shopian has set a commendable example of efficient governance and crisis management by ensuring the timely restoration of normal life following successive heavy snowfall spells.
During the intervening night of 22-23 January, the district experienced intense and widespread snowfall, disrupting road connectivity, power supply, and water supplies.
Immediately thereafter, the district administration swung into action, activating its snow clearance and emergency response mechanism to ensure that basic facilities were restored in a swift, coordinated, and systematic manner.
The entire operation was personally supervised and closely monitored by the Deputy Commissioner, Shopian, Shishir Gupta who played a pivotal leadership role throughout the crisis.
He tirelessly monitored the situation round the clock and maintained continuous communication with field officers, reviewed ground reports in real time, and issued timely directions to ensure uninterrupted restoration and rescue efforts across the district.
A phased snow-clearance plan was implemented, with Priority-I and Priority-II roads, including major roads and key traffic corridors, cleared on priority, enabling early restoration of traffic mobility. Subsequently, inner and link roads, particularly in rural and interior areas to ensure last-mile connectivity, were taken up and cleared.
A major highlight of the district’s response was the restoration of electricity supply in majority parts of the district within a day after the first heavy snowfall spell, despite severe weather and terrain challenges.
Subsequently, the district faced another heavy spell of snowfall on 27 January 2026. Once again, District Shopian demonstrated its preparedness and resilience by ensuring the mobility, electricity and water supplies, ensuring minimal inconvenience to the public.
Rescue of vulnerable populations and shifting of ailing including critical ill, pregnant patients were ensured by joint efforts of Revenue, Police and R&B teams during both the spells. Healthcare services remained largely unaffected throughout the period.
Areas facing temporary water scarcity were catered through water tanker services until the restoration of most water supply schemes. Out of the affected schemes, only three remained impacted for a few days, of which only one is currently under restoration and is expected to be functional soon.
Successful restoration of services and rescue operations was made possible due to excellent inter-departmental coordination among Revenue, PMGSY, R&B, MED, Jal Shakti, KPDCL and other allied departments.
Frontline workers, engineering staff and supervising staff worked relentlessly on a 24×7 basis, braving extreme weather conditions to restore normalcy.
Deputy Commissioner, Shopian, congratulated and appreciated the collective efforts of all officers and officials, including SDM, ACD, Tehsildars, BDOs, engineers, supervisory staff, and other frontline workers, who worked hand in hand to mitigate public hardships.
