Srinagar: The meteorological department has forecasted light rain and snow in certain areas on January 28, with a generally dry period expected from January 29 to 31, although cloudy skies are anticipated on the evening of January 31.
The Meteorological Department has said that From February 1 to 2 weather is expected to be predominantly cloudy, with light to moderate rain or snow likely in scattered to fairly widespread locations. Between February 3 and 6, partly cloudy skies are predicted across the region. In response to the inclement weather predictions, authorities have issued several advisories. Travelers and transporters are urged to verify road and highway conditions with relevant traffic departments and adhere to official instructions. Farmers are advised to halt farm operations, and the public is cautioned against entering snowbound and avalanche-prone areas. The Jammu and Kashmir UT Disaster Management Authority has issued a high-level avalanche warning for regions above 2,000 meters in Bandipora, Ganderbal, and Kupwara for the next 24 hours. Residents and visitors are advised to avoid risky areas and follow official advisories closely. In emergencies, individuals are encouraged to contact emergency services by dialing 112. The Meteorological Department has also indicated that the weather may disrupt transport and daily activities, particularly in higher altitudes, and has requested the public to exercise caution. Recently, an avalanche occurred near New Truck Yard, Sonamarg, but fortunately, there were no reported casualties or property damage. Local authorities, including the Ganderbal Police and the State Disaster Response Force, are actively monitoring the situation and have implemented precautionary measures to ensure public safety. The Ganderbal Police have emphasized the high risk of avalanches and advised against unnecessary movement in vulnerable zones. They urge the public, tourists, and transporters to avoid visiting or stopping in avalanche-prone areas, prioritizing safety while traveling through the Sonamarg axis and surrounding regions. The J&K Police remain committed to public safety and encourage everyone to stay alert and act responsibly.
