Kathua : Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Transport, Youth Services & Sports, Information Technology, Science & Technology, ARI &Trainings, Satish Sharma, Monday extended warm greetings to the people of Jammu and Kashmir on the occasion of the 77th Republic Day, recalling the nation’s constitutional values, sacrifices of freedom fighters and the collective resolve to build a strong and inclusive India.
The Minister hoisted the Tricolour and took salute at March past contingents drawn from Police, Paramilitary forces, College and School students, at Sports Stadium Kathua.
Addressing the gathering on Republic Day the Minister emphasized its significance as the day the Constitution of India came into effect in 1950, following extensive efforts led by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. He also noted the historic importance of January 26, 1930, when the pledge of ‘Purna Swaraj’ was taken. The Minister highlighted the Tricolour as a symbol of national unity, courage, peace, and prosperity, representing the collective spirit of the nation across its diverse regions. Tributes were paid to the heroes of Jammu and Kashmir, including General Zorawar Singh and Brigadier Rajinder Singh, with gratitude expressed towards the Army, Police, and security forces for maintaining peace in the region. Minister Sharma discussed the progress in Jammu and Kashmir, marking a new era of peace and development under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s leadership, with a focus on equitable development and improved citizen facilities. The Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP) was highlighted for its role in supporting farmers and promoting high-value crops, leading to increased rural incomes. Kathua district was noted for its agricultural advancements, including mushroom cultivation and the global recognition of local crafts. The strengthened Public Distribution System was mentioned as a means of ensuring food security for millions of families, alongside new transportation initiatives aimed at improving accessibility for women and pilgrims. In terms of urban development, the Minister reported on the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana 2.0, which provides housing for previously excluded families, and efforts to enhance urban centers. Significant progress in safe drinking water access was noted, with over 70% of rural households now receiving tap water. Industrial growth was also emphasized, with major companies establishing manufacturing units in Kathua, creating job opportunities for youth. Youth empowerment initiatives, such as Project Yuva, and the promotion of sports through large-scale events were discussed, with Kathua being recognized as a model district for progress in various sectors. The Minister addressed the issue of substance abuse, outlining a multi-faceted strategy to combat drug trafficking and addiction, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in this effort. Concluding his address, the Minister underscored that development transcends physical infrastructure, focusing on unity, brotherhood, and collective responsibility. He called on citizens to uphold constitutional values and work together for nation-building. The event featured vibrant cultural performances by students and included the recognition of martyr families, meritorious students, and public service achievers, with notable local leaders in attendance.
