Srinagar : After nearly 22 months, the mortal remains of a Srinagar resident who went missing in a boat capsizing incident in 2024 were recovered from the Jhelum on Monday, officials said.
The body of Showkat Ahmad Sheikh a resident of Gandbal, Batawara, Srinagar was retrieved by a local sand extractor in coordination with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) Quick Response Team (QRT) Jhelum, Srinagar.
Showkat had gone missing in a tragic boat capsizing incident on April 16, 2024, at Gandbal, Batawara, when a boat overturned in the Jhelum river. In the incident, 19 people, including 12 children, fell into the river. During the rescue operations, 10 people were rescued alive and eight bodies were recovered, while Showkat Sheikh remained untraced.
Officials said on January 11, a human foot along with shoes was recovered by a sand extractor, prompting the SDRF to resume search operations. Officials said that after sustained searches, the mortal remains of the last missing person from the tragic incident were finally recovered.
