Srinagar: This week, KH Snippets focuses on the sensitive and long-pending issue of Indian baby girl Ariha Shah, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during their talks in Ahmedabad. The engagement highlighted humanitarian concerns at the highest level of India–Germany relations
1. PM Modi Personally Raises Baby Ariha Shah Case With German Chancellor: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday personally raised the case of Indian baby girl Ariha Shah with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during their talks in Ahmedabad, signalling India’s highest-level engagement on the sensitive issue. The move underlined New Delhi’s humanitarian concern and commitment to ensuring the child’s welfare and cultural well-being.
2. India, Germany Agree To Treat Ariha Shah Matter on Humanitarian Grounds: India and Germany are increasingly approaching the Ariha Shah case as a humanitarian issue rather than a purely legal one, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said. He noted that New Delhi remains in constant dialogue with both the German government and its embassy in India, reflecting a compassionate and constructive diplomatic approach.
3. Efforts On To Ensure Indian Cultural Upbringing For Baby Ariha: The Indian government is actively working to ensure that baby Ariha is raised in an Indian cultural environment while in Germany, including her participation in Indian festivals and interaction with Indian community members. Officials said these steps aim to preserve her linguistic, social and cultural roots during the ongoing process.
4. India Committed To Continuous Engagement with Germany on Ariha Shah Case: Reaffirming India’s support to the family, the Centre said it will continue to raise the Ariha Shah issue at every level with the German government. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stressed that the matter carries the same priority as other bilateral concerns, highlighting India’s sustained diplomatic follow-up.
5. Modi–Merz Talks Strengthen India–Germany Ties Across Trade, Defence, People-to-People Links: The meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Merz in Ahmedabad strengthened India–Germany relations across multiple fronts, including trade, defence cooperation and people-to-people ties. With bilateral trade crossing USD 50 billion and new defence cooperation frameworks taking shape, both sides reiterated their commitment to deepening a strategic partnership—within which humanitarian concerns like the Ariha Shah case continue to receive serious attention.
