Jammu: Speaker, Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Advocate Abdul Rahim Rather Thursday addressed the Book Review event of ‘Durr-e-Naayaab’, a biography of Shaheed Wali Mohammad Itoo at Department of Urdu, University of Jammu. The book, authored by Minister Sakeena Itoo, daughter of late leader, chronicles the life and contributions of Shaheed Wali Mohammad Itoo, former Minister and Speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, who was assassinated on March 18, 1994, in Jammu.
Speaking on the occasion the Speaker paid tribute to the late leader Shaheed Wali Mohammad Itoo, highlighting his dedication as an able administrator and a people-friendly leader who sacrificed his life for the welfare of the downtrodden communities in Jammu and Kashmir. He emphasized Itoo’s unwavering commitment to his principles and his desire to uplift his people during the challenging times of militancy in the early nineties. The Speaker reflected on their close relationship, which began when they were both elected as MLAs in 1977, and noted Itoo’s significant impact on those around him throughout his political career. The Speaker also praised Itoo’s daughter, Sakeena Itoo, for her literary achievements and her commitment to continuing her father’s legacy. He commended her for writing a book that serves as a guide for the younger generation, reflecting on her father’s life and mission. Additionally, he acknowledged the exceptional performance of government schools in recent examination results, attributing this success to the dedication of teachers and the government’s efforts to improve the education sector. Minister Sakeena Itoo shared personal memories of her father, expressing gratitude to various leaders for their support in writing her book. Vice Chancellor of Jammu University, Prof. Umesh Rai, described the book as an important resource for young people, promising university support for its translation into multiple languages. Noted poet and writer Prof. Mohammad Zaman Azarduh praised the book as a tribute from a daughter to her father, emphasizing Itoo’s lifelong dedication to societal welfare. The event also featured a review of the book ‘Durr-e-Naayaab’ by Assistant Professor Dr. Sehnaz Qadri, which captivated the audience. The book was officially released by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in October 2025 at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre in Srinagar, with attendance from various dignitaries, faculty members, and students.
