Srinagar : Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi on Tuesday said that the terrorist recruitment in Jammu and Kashmir is almost non-existent and that local terrorists are now in single digits, indicating a positive change in the Union Territory.
Talking to reporters during his first press conference of 2026, General Dwivedi said that since May 10 last year, the situation along the Western Front and J&K remains sensitive but firmly under control.
He said that In 2025, a total of 31 terrorists were eliminated, with 65% of them being of Pakistani origin, including the three individuals responsible for the Pahalgam attack, who were neutralized during Operation Mahadev. The situation in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) shows significant improvement, as active local terrorists are now in single digits and terrorist recruitment has drastically decreased, with only two recruits reported in 2025. Positive developments in the region include increased development activities, a revival in tourism, and a successful Amarnath Yatra that attracted over 400,000 pilgrims, surpassing the five-year average. Operation Sindoor is ongoing, with a commitment to respond decisively to any future threats. The Army Chief highlighted the collaborative efforts of various national stakeholders, including Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), intelligence agencies, and local administrations, which have contributed to the operation’s success. He described Operation Sindoor as a prime example of effective tri-service cooperation, executed with precision over an 88-hour period, successfully targeting and dismantling terror infrastructure. The Army has destroyed seven out of nine identified targets and is prepared for a ground offensive if necessary. The situation along the Northern Borders is gradually normalizing, with increased activities such as grazing and hydrotherapy camps. The Army’s strategic posture along the Line of Actual Control remains robust, supported by ongoing capability development and infrastructure enhancements. Despite the progress, eight terrorist camps remain active, with two located near the International Border and six across the Line of Control. The Army is closely monitoring these camps due to potential training activities. While there were forward movements during Operation Sindoor, both India and Pakistan have since reduced these actions, although vigilance continues. Regarding nuclear threats during the May 2025 conflict, the Army Chief clarified that there were no military communications on nuclear warfare, attributing any nuclear rhetoric to political or public discourse in Pakistan rather than military sources.
