Rajouri : District Development Commissioner Rajouri, Abhishek Sharma Wednesday formally launched maize flour promoted by the “Sai Baba Women Self Help Group Khawas” of Aspirational Block Khawas.
The launch ceremony was held in the presence of Chief Agriculture Officer Rajesh Verma.
Speaking on the occasion, the District Development Commissioner appreciated the Department of Agriculture Production & Farmers Welfare for promoting value-added agricultural products from remote areas of the district. “Maize is the main crop of Rajouri district, with production levels higher than the national average. Owing to the hilly terrain and limited accessibility, maize cultivation in Block Khawas is largely organic in nature,” he noted and added “Traditionally water-milled maize flour, locally known as Gharat Atta, is a staple food of the district.” He expressed confidence that the launch of maize flour promoted by the women Self Help Group will generate sustainable income for its members and significantly improve their economic condition.
Chief Agriculture Officer informed that maize is grown over an area of 40,260 hectares in the district, making Rajouri the highest maize-producing district in Jammu & Kashmir. He further stated that the maize flour produced by the Sai Baba Women Self Help Group, Khawas has been duly registered under FSSAI, ensuring quality and food safety standards.
Earlier, during her visit to the Rajouri, Harleen Kaur, Prabhari Officer of Aspirational Block Khawas also inspected the maize flour stall. She lauded the efforts of the Self Help Group and the district administration, emphasizing that such initiatives directly contribute to enhancing farmers’ income and promoting women-led entrepreneurship in rural areas.
