New Delhi : Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said politics is not meant for the pursuit of power, it is a sacred trust of public service, and democracy endures only when guided by integrity and character.
Singh was addressing a gathering at the Delhi Assembly on Saturday during the inaugural ceremony of unveiling the portraits former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, where he also said that the two leaders exemplified the highest standards of democratic responsibility, moral integrity, and also national commitment.
He said that the kind of public conduct Vajpayee and Malaviya had back then, is something that still continues to offer guidance on ethical politics, unity of purpose, and the precedence of long-term national interest, above political gains.
Singh noted that as the nation commemorates the birth centenary of Vajpayee, the unveiling of the portraits in the historic House is something that holds special significance.
Defence Minister observed that the Delhi Vidhan Sabha is not merely an architectural structure, but a living institution where country’s democratic consciousness evolved over time with debate, and dialogue.
He recalled leaders like Sardar Vithalbhai Patel, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, and Motilal Nehru, who shaped the idea of India within these democratic spaces even before Independence.
“The occasion symbolises not only a tribute to the great individuals, but also a reaffirmation of enduring ethical politics, education- led nation-building and public service,” Singh stated.
Speaking on the occasion, Delhi Assembly SPeaker Vijender Gupta described the day as a moment of pride for the House, as portraits of the two stalwarts, both born on December 25, were unveiled in the Assembly.
Paying rich tributes to the two leaders, Gupta said that the soul, direction, and vision of modern India cannot be imagined without their contributions.
Speaker shared a personal anecdote underscoring Vajpayee’s belief that governance must begin with concern for the poor, the needy, and the oppressed.
These are the ethos that continue to guide public policy under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he added.
Delhi CM Rekha Gupta who was also present on the occasion said that the installation of these portraits is not only a tribute to the past, but also a source of inspiration for future generations.
She noted that the vision, dedication, and principles of Malaviya and Vajpayee serve as guiding lights for students, policymakers, and citizens.
Highlighting the importance of taking the path shown by these leaders, Gupta said that it is the collective responsibility of every citizen to uphold their legacy.
