Srinagar: The Meteorological Department has forecast generally cloudy weather across Jammu and Kashmir, with light to moderate rain and snowfall expected at most places from Wednesday night till Thursday morning or forenoon, officials said.
Witnesses said that Snowfall was continuing in various parts of north Kashmir, including the ski resort Gulmarg and areas like Sonamarg, Gurez, and Tulail. The MET Centre in Srinagar has indicated that a western disturbance will impact the Union Territory from the night of December 31 to January 1, bringing light to moderate rain or snowfall across most areas. Higher elevations in north and central Kashmir may experience moderate to heavy snowfall during this time. On January 2, weather conditions are expected to be partly to generally cloudy, with isolated light rain or snowfall. From January 3 to January 5, the forecast predicts partly cloudy weather, while January 6 may see generally cloudy conditions with potential light snowfall in isolated higher areas. The weather is anticipated to remain partly cloudy from January 7 to January 8, transitioning to partly to generally cloudy on January 9 and 10, and returning to partly cloudy from January 11 to January 13. Travelers and transporters are advised to adhere to traffic and administrative advisories due to the expected snowfall in higher regions. Additionally, moderate fog is predicted over the plains of the Jammu division, with dense fog in isolated areas over the next 48 hours. Minimum temperatures across Kashmir are slightly above freezing, with Srinagar at 2.3 degrees Celsius, Qazigund at 1.4 degrees, and Pahalgam at 1.8 degrees. Gulmarg remains below freezing at minus 3.0 degrees Celsius, while Pulwama and Shopian report sub-zero temperatures. In the Jammu region, minimum temperatures are higher, with Jammu city at 10.4 degrees Celsius and Katra at 10.0 degrees. In Ladakh, Leh recorded a minimum temperature of minus 6.0 degrees Celsius. Adverse weather has led to the cancellation of several flights at Srinagar International Airport, including multiple Air India and IndiGo flights, with passengers advised to check for updates before heading to the airport.
