Srinagar: After a prolonged period of subdued tourist activity, the picturesque hill resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district has once again come alive with a significant influx of visitors on the occasion of New Year, bringing cheer to the local tourism industry.
According to tourism stakeholdersHotel bookings in Pahalgam have surged to nearly 60% as the Tourism Festival, organized by the Pahalgam Development Authority (PDA), concludes tonight. This increase in tourist activity coincides with the festival, which began on December 25, aimed at promoting Pahalgam as a vibrant all-weather tourist destination through cultural programs, local cuisine, music, and recreational activities. Local hoteliers have expressed relief at the New Year influx, which follows a period of uncertainty after an attack in April 2025. The CEO of PDA, Hilal Ahmad, noted that the positive tourist response indicates growing confidence in Kashmir as a safe destination. The festival was inaugurated by a young girl from Mumbai to symbolize inclusivity and the welcoming nature of Pahalgam. Ahmad highlighted the collaborative efforts of local stakeholders, including hoteliers, ponywalas, tour guides, and shopkeepers, in reviving tourism. He also mentioned plans to diversify winter tourism by introducing snow-based activities in Betaab Valley, aiming to attract visitors during colder months. Tourists have expressed their satisfaction with the festive atmosphere and the natural beauty of Pahalgam, reinforcing the town’s reputation as a premier tourist destination. Local vendors and ponywalas have shared their optimism, viewing the return of tourists as a sign of better economic prospects. As the festival concludes, stakeholders remain hopeful that the New Year rush will lead to a stronger winter tourism season.
