Srinagar: The Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Kashmir celebrated its Silver Jubilee, marking 25 years of academic excellence and contributions to environmental science.
The event, themed “Engaging with Peers and Alumni,” included a day-long program featuring an inaugural session, alumni interactions, and commemorative activities held at the Science Block Auditorium. Vice Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan highlighted the department’s evolution from its inception under the Centre of Research for Development (CORD) to its current status as an independent entity. She emphasized the importance of aligning research with societal needs, particularly in addressing environmental challenges such as water pollution and climate change, advocating for practical, science-based solutions. Deans of various faculties underscored the necessity of collaborative research and resource sharing to tackle complex environmental issues effectively. They also stressed the value of maintaining strong alumni connections, which provide current students and researchers with insights from the experiences of former students. Dr. Sami Ullah Bhat, Head of the Department, welcomed attendees and acknowledged the significant contributions of alumni to scientific research and environmental protection. The event included the recognition of former faculty members for their roles in the department’s growth and featured a documentary showcasing the department’s achievements and alumni success stories. Prominent alumni shared their experiences, enriching the celebration with their insights and perspectives.
