Srinagar : The Department of Mathematics, University of Kashmir (KU), in collaboration with Jammu & Kashmir Science, Technology & Innovation Council (JKSTIC), organised a two-day Math Fest 2025 at the Main Campus to commemorate the National Day of Mathematics, celebrating the 138th birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan.
The event focused on enhancing mathematical awareness and inspiring school students towards the subject. Vice-Chancellor of KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, emphasized the importance of mathematics in fostering scientific thinking and logical reasoning, highlighting that such initiatives are crucial for developing analytical skills in young learners. She noted that celebrating Ramanujan’s legacy through academic engagement and outreach reflects the university’s dedication to foundational sciences and nurturing future scholars. During the inaugural session, Prof. Manzoor A. Malik, Dean of the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, underscored the lasting significance of Ramanujan’s contributions and the necessity for ongoing efforts to cultivate curiosity and excellence in mathematics. Prof. M. A. Khanday, Head of the Department of Mathematics and Convener of the event, expressed the festival’s goal of connecting classrooms, research, and society by fostering inclusive learning platforms. The Math Fest included various thematic sessions such as the National Day of Mathematics celebration, an Alumni Meet for 2025, a School Outreach Programme, and presentations of research papers. Expert lectures were delivered by notable academics, including Prof. P. G. Siddheshwar, Prof. Subuhi Khan, and Prof. Renu Jain, who discussed topics ranging from Ramanujan’s legacy to the application of mathematics in daily life and advanced concepts. A special outreach program successfully engaged over 150 school students from Classes VIII to XII through interactive discussions and medal distribution. Additionally, research scholars presented their work, facilitating academic exchange. The event concluded with a valedictory session that reaffirmed the department’s commitment to enhancing mathematical education, strengthening alumni connections, and fostering a robust research culture.
