Awantipora : The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (DJMC) at the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) hosted an outreach program featuring Hakeem Irfan Rashid, Senior Assistant Editor at The Economic Times and a recipient of the Ramnath Goenka Award for Excellence in Journalism.
The event, titled “Journalism in Times of an Evolving Media Landscape,” focused on the rapid changes within the media ecosystem, particularly the influence of digital technologies and algorithms on newsrooms, as well as the critical need for credibility amidst information overload. Dr. Rabia Noor, Head of DJMC, highlighted the importance of ethical and responsible journalism in today’s fast-paced media environment. He encouraged students to develop critical thinking and media literacy skills before entering the profession. Irfan, a World Press Institute Fellow, advised aspiring journalists to recognize their choices and privileges, maintain discipline, and continuously enhance their skills to adapt to the evolving landscape of journalism. He emphasized that journalism should prioritize the public good and cautioned students about the challenges posed by social media and algorithm-driven platforms. Irfan shared insights from his career, providing students with a deeper understanding of the realities of newsroom operations, political reporting, and the ethical dilemmas journalists face. The program successfully connected academic learning with industry practices, fostering active engagement among students, scholars, and faculty members.
