Shopian : A grand community-outreach programme on disaster preparedness and mitigation was Wednesday organised at Government Degree College (GDC), Zainapora, by collaboration of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire & Emergency Services Department and local administration.
The event witnessed overwhelming participation from local residents, elders, students, APDA Mitras, youth volunteers, lumberdars and chowkidars, reflecting the community’s commitment to building resilience against natural calamities.
While speaking on the occasion, SDM, Zainapora, Bilal Ahmed, highlighted the need for a strong, multi-stakeholder disaster-management framework. He stressed the importance of educating communities about risk-reduction measures, early-warning signals and emergency-response procedures, particularly in flood-prone and seismically vulnerable areas.
Officers from the SDRF, Fire & Emergency Services and other departments delivered interactive sessions on the risks of earthquakes, fires and floods in Zainapora, with emphasis on early-warning systems and mitigation strategies.
Participants received hands-on training in basic first aid, fire-extinguishing techniques and swift rescue operations. Volunteers also demonstrated coordinated drills illustrating the need for quick and organised response during emergencies.
Information pamphlets and emergency contact lists were distributed among all attendees.
