Srinagar: Russian President Vladimir Putin’s state visit to India marked a significant milestone in the decades-old India-Russia partnership. Against a backdrop of global geopolitical shifts and mounting Western pressures, the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit in New Delhi focused on strengthening economic ties, enhancing strategic cooperation, and reinforcing people-to-people connections.
1. Economic Cooperation Boosted: India and Russia unveiled a five-year roadmap to strengthen bilateral trade and investment, aiming to increase annual trade from USD 64 billion to USD 100 billion by 2030. Focus areas include pharmaceuticals, agriculture, critical minerals, and high-tech sectors.
2. Energy Security Assured: Russia reaffirmed its role as a reliable supplier of oil, gas, and coal to India, offering uninterrupted fuel shipments despite Western pressures, ensuring India’s growing energy needs are met.
3. Peace Advocacy in Ukraine: Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s stance for peaceful resolution in Ukraine, while Putin acknowledged India’s diplomatic efforts, highlighting New Delhi’s credibility as a neutral mediator.
4. Defence , Strategic Collaboration: The two sides reinforced long-standing defence ties, including BrahMos missile cooperation, AK-203 production, and space collaboration. Maritime security and shipbuilding, including Arctic and polar capabilities, were also discussed.
5. Connectivity, Infrastructure Initiatives: Plans were announced to enhance transport and trade links through the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), Chennai-Vladivostok Maritime Corridor, and Arctic shipping routes, along with training Indian seafarers for polar waters.
6. People-to-People, Cultural Ties Strengthened: Visa facilitation measures, including free 30-day e-tourist visas and group visas for Russians, along with manpower mobility agreements, aim to boost cultural, educational, and professional exchanges between the two nations.
