New Delhi|Dec, 4: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday said the an electronic toll collection system will replace the present tool collection system to ensure facility of  a seamless experience for highway users.

The Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways announced during question hour in Lok Sabha that a new electronic toll collection system has been launched in 10 locations and is set to be implemented nationwide within a year. This initiative aims to eliminate traditional toll booths, allowing for seamless travel without stops for toll payments. The minister highlighted that there are currently 4,500 highway projects underway, valued at Rs 10 lakh crore.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has developed the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) program, which serves as a unified platform for electronic toll payments across India’s highways. Central to this system is FASTag, a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) device that is attached to a vehicle’s windscreen. This technology enables automatic toll payments from the user’s linked account, enhancing efficiency and convenience for drivers.
