New Delhi : The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested an “absconder” in connection with the 1989 high-profile kidnapping of Rubaiya Sayeed, daughter of former union Home Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, officials said.
CBI said the arrested “absconder” Shafat Ahmed Shangloo was wanted in the 35 year-old-case.
They added that Shangloo, who was arrested from Srinagar, had “conspired with Yasin Malik and others in committing the crime under various sections of the Ranbir Penal Code and TADA Act during 1989”.
The absconder was carrying a reward of Rs. 10 lacs on his head, CBI said in a statement. He will be produced before the TADA Court Jammu, within stipulated time as per law. Rubaiya, then a medical intern, was abducted on December 8, 1989, in Srinagar—just six days after her father Mufti Sayeed assumed charge as Home Minister in the V.P. Singh government.
The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) claimed responsibility within hours for the kidnapping through a call to a local newspaper. Rubaiya was released five days later after the Centre agreed to free five jailed militants.
The case was later taken over by the CBI. Rubaiya is a key prosecution witness and, in 2022, identified the jailed JKLF chief Yasin Malik and three others as her abductors before a Special TADA court
