Srinagar : Police on Thursday said that it has achieved a major breakthrough by cracking a multi-district cheating and stolen-gold racket operating across the Kashmir Valley.
In a statement issued here on Thursday Police said that A woman named Asmat Jan, also known as Taboo, was arrested by the Lal Bazar police for her involvement in multiple cases of cheating and fraud across various locations, including Lal Bazar, Safakadal, Chadoora, Sopore, and Khrew. She had been evading law enforcement by frequently relocating between West Bengal, Punjab, Maharashtra, and Jammu. The arrest was made possible through the efforts of five dedicated police teams, who apprehended her at Hotel White House in Jalandhar, Punjab, following specific intelligence. The Gold Association of Kashmir Valley had previously raised concerns about her repeated fraudulent activities targeting gold shopkeepers in the region. An FIR (No. 42/2025) has been registered against her at Police Station Lal Bazar under relevant sections of the law. Further investigations revealed the involvement of two associates: Shameem Ahmad Sheikh, a goldsmith, and Basir Ahmad Dar, who were implicated in the illegal trade of stolen gold. Sheikh was arrested for purchasing stolen gold ornaments at undervalued rates and facilitating their concealment, while Dar was apprehended for transporting and disposing of the stolen gold. All three individuals are currently in custody, and ongoing investigations are expected to lead to additional arrests and recoveries as the case develops.
