CS visits Tawi Barrage, River front to assess its pace of completion

Jammu: Chief Secretary, Atal Dulloo Monday visited the Tawi Barrage project site to assess the progress of the ongoing works on the Tawi Barrage and the Riverfront development project. The visit was part of a comprehensive assessment of major infrastructure projects under implementation along the Tawi River. Accompanying the Chief Secretary during the visit were Additional Chief Secretary Shaleen Kabra, Divisional Commissioner Jammu Ramesh Kumar, Commissioner Jammu Municipal Corporation and CEO Jammu Smart City Limited Dr Devansh Yadav, and Deputy Commissioner Jammu Dr Rakesh Minhas, along with senior officers of the concerned departments and executing agencies.
During field inspection, the Chief Secretary evaluated the status of the barrage structures and led a meeting to discuss project milestones. It was reported that all gates of the Tawi Barrage have been installed and are operational, with hydro mechanical works nearing completion. The Chief Secretary was updated on ongoing rectification efforts due to damages from recent floods, which have affected both mechanical and civil components, necessitating restoration and reinforcement activities. The meeting also addressed the Tawi Riverfront Development Project, which is advancing on both banks of the river. The Chief Secretary emphasized the importance of adhering to project timelines and maintaining rigorous monitoring of execution schedules and quality standards. He instructed relevant departments to accelerate work, particularly on the right bank, highlighting that the timely completion of both the barrage and riverfront projects is crucial for the integrated rejuvenation of the river corridor and the enhancement of Jammu’s urban landscape. Officers informed the Chief Secretary that the twin barrage system, which encompasses the Nikki and Waddi Tawi channels, will improve river flow regulation, facilitate the interception and diversion of multiple nallahs, and create a controlled water body. This initiative aims to bolster the city’s resilience against future flooding while also providing recreational and tourism opportunities for residents and visitors. The Chief Secretary recognized the Tawi Barrage and Riverfront projects as flagship initiatives under the Jammu Smart City Mission, marking a significant advancement toward transforming Jammu into a modern, sustainable, and environmentally balanced urban center. He directed all executing agencies to ensure close coordination and strict compliance with safety and environmental standards throughout the project.
