NIT Srinagar receives ISRO funding of ₹26.25 lakh for research on extreme weather forecasting tool

Project aims to develop nowcasting framework for thunderstorms, cloudbursts over Himalayan terrain

Srinagar : The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar has secured funding from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for a significant research initiative titled “Development of Nowcasting Tool for Extreme Weather Events (Thunderstorms and Cloud Burst) Using Surface and Satellite Measurements Over Orographically Complex Region of India.”

The project, which will be led by Dr. Sandeep Samantaray and co-led by Dr. Deepak Kumar Naik, is set to last for thirty-six months with a total funding of ₹26,25,676. The project aims to create an advanced nowcasting framework to enhance the prediction of extreme weather events, particularly in mountainous regions like the Himalayas. By integrating surface measurements with satellite data, the research seeks to improve short-term weather forecasting and bolster early warning systems for disaster management, thereby minimizing potential loss of life and property during severe weather occurrences. The initiative is part of ISRO’s RESPOND Programme, which promotes collaborative research in areas of national significance related to space science and applications. The research is expected to strengthen India’s capacity to respond to the increasing frequency of extreme weather events driven by climate variability.
