Srinagar : Police in Sopore have intensified their efforts to enhance security and prevent the misuse of SIM cards for illegal activities by conducting inspections of various SIM card vendors within the district. This initiative primarily focused on verifying customer documentation, ensuring compliance with Know Your Customer (KYC) regulations, and adhering to the guidelines set by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). The inspections aimed to ensure that no SIM cards are issued without proper verification.
During the drive, vendors were educated about their legal responsibilities and warned of potential strict actions in cases of violations or negligence. The overarching goal of this initiative is to combat the use of SIM cards in cybercrime, impersonation, online fraud, and misinformation campaigns, thereby protecting public communication systems from exploitation by criminal or anti-national elements. Furthermore, the police emphasized that telecom retailers share a significant responsibility in maintaining the integrity of communication networks and must exercise diligence when issuing SIM cards. Police in its statement reiterated its commitment for public safety, prevention of cyber-enabled crimes, and promotion of lawful and transparent communication services throughout the district.
