Srinagar: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar has officially launched its campus chapter of the Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS) initiative through an event titled “FOSSConnect: The Open-Source Gallery Talk.”
The initiative aims to enhance open-source learning, collaboration, and innovation within the institute’s academic framework. The launch event was attended by key figures including Prof. Mohammad Abid Bazaz, Dean of Students’ Welfare, and Dr. Shabir Ahmad Sofi, Head of the Department of Information Technology, along with over 120 students and faculty members. In his inaugural address, Prof. Bazaz emphasized the importance of the FOSS initiative in fostering a self-reliant and collaborative academic culture, encouraging students to innovate and address real-world challenges. He noted that this initiative aligns with NIT Srinagar’s vision of equipping students with practical, community-driven technical skills. Dr. Sofi reinforced the significance of open-source education, stating that it is foundational to today’s software ecosystem and that students should actively contribute to these platforms. Er. Mustafa Zargar highlighted the growing interest among young technologists in creating transparent software solu₹50,000 for organizing various open-source development projects. The event signifies the beginning of a long-term commitment to making NIT Srinagar a key player in India’s open-source network. Student coordinators expressed their vision of building a community centered around learning and sharing. Additionally, a team from the Central University of Kashmir won the Ideathon, with NIT Srinagar teams securing second and third places, indicating a spirit of inter-campus collaboration. Looking ahead, the FOSS NIT Srinagar chapter plans to host more hackathons, coding workshops, and collaborative projects, aiming to contribute significantly to the global open-source ecosystem.
