Bandipora :: Under the aegis of Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP)-02, “Promotion of Niche Crops in UT of J&K,” SKUAST-Kashmir, through its Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) and Mountain Agriculture Research & Extension Station (MAR&ES) Gurez, organized a one-day training programme on Revival and Promotion of Kala Zeera at KVK Gurez.

The programme witnessed participation of officers from various departments, progressive farmers, and budding entrepreneurs from across the Gurez valley.

Speaking on the occasion, Head Division of Agronomy, FoAWadura, and Principal Investigator HADP:02, Prof. Bashir Ahmad Alie, elaborated on the significance of Kala Zeera as an important niche crop identified for revival, promotion, value addition, and market linkage under the HADP framework. Through a detailed presentation and hands-on demonstration, Prof. Alie explained the scientific techniques of Kala Zeera sowing and emphasized collective responsibility among researchers, departments, and farmers in safeguarding this heritage crop.

Referring to the recent visit of Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-K and Director Extension SKUAST-Kashmir, to KVK/MAR&ES Gurez, Head KVK Gurez, Dr. H.A. Malik, informed that as per the directions of the competent authority, the revival of Kala Zeera has been prioritized both at station and farmers’ level. He further stated that under the NABARD-funded Kala Zeera project, 23,000 quality tubers have been successfully planted at the station, while identified farmers from hotspot areas across Gurez will also receive quality seed and planting material.

On the occasion speakers highlighted the employment and income generation potential of Kala Zeera cultivation, citing its unique aroma, organic character, and strong national and international demand.

Progressive farmers and young entrepreneurs working on Kala Zeera also shared their field experiences and feedback during the interaction session.
