Srinagar : The Department of Persian at the University of Kashmir has initiated a 15-day National Workshop on Sharda Script (Basic Level) at its Main Campus, aimed at educating participants about the ancient Sharda script, promoting its preservation, and fostering research on Kashmir’s manuscript heritage.
Sponsored by the National Mission for Manuscripts (NMM) under the Gyan Bharatham initiative, the workshop will run until November 11 and includes expert sessions on Sharda script fundamentals, manuscript preservation, paleography, and transcription techniques. During the inaugural session, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan emphasized the university’s commitment to preserving India’s linguistic and cultural heritage, highlighting the Sharda script’s historical significance for Kashmir. She noted that reviving interest in the script is crucial for safeguarding cultural traditions and reconnecting with regional identity. Shri Samar Nanda, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, and Dr. Anirban Dash, Director of NMM, praised the initiative and stressed the importance of training young scholars in traditional scripts to enhance manuscript research in India.
