Bandipora : Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K), under the ambit of Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP) Project No. 16 titled “Alternate System of Agriculture for Sustainability,” in collaboration with KVK / MAR&ES Gurez, Wednesday organized a one-day training programme for progressive farmers, farm women, and budding agri-entrepreneurs.

Speaking on the occasion, Principal Investigator, Prof. Parmeet Singh, highlighted the current challenges confronting the agriculture sector and emphasized that adopting alternate systems of agriculture through organic and natural means offers a viable solution for sustainable production, enhanced quality, and better income returns. He observed that farmers in the Gurez valley have traditionally been following organic practices and added that certification of such practices on standard lines would help in establishing a unique brand identity for Gurez-grown products.

Head KVK/MAR&ES Gurez, Dr. Hilal Ahmad Malik, informed that several initiatives have been undertaken for conserving heritage and niche crops of the region. Hadded that efforts are underway for the introduction and promotion of newly released University varieties of economically important crops to ensure organic and sustainable agricultural practices in the valley.

KVK scientists Dr. Jauhar Rafeeq and Dr. Shahida Altaf, along with HADP Project Associates Dr. Moneesa and Dr. Shayista, deliberated upon the importance of eco-friendly measures for sustainable farming and soil health improvement. The event was ably supported by Technical Officers Tanzeer Hussain and Manzoor Ahmad, whose contribution added to the success of the programme.

As a gesture of appreciation towards the farming community, bio-fertilizers containing beneficial microorganisms were distributed free of cost among the participants to promote soil health and improve crop productivity. The participants expressed gratitude to SKUAST-K for organizing a programme of immense practical relevance to the local farming community.
