Srinagar : Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Anshul Garg, Saturday inaugurated the second edition of the “Know Your Artisan” series at the iconic Ghanta Ghar, Lal Chowk, Srinagar.

The event, organized by the Department of Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir under the Soulful Kashmir campaign, witnessed enthusiastic participation from craft lovers, tourists and buyers alike.

Divisional Commissioner went around the stalls and interacted with National and UT Level Awardees representing the rich handicraft heritage of Kashmir, including Papier Mâché, Sozni, Kani Weaving, Walnut Wood Carving, Copperware, Namda, Kangri Making and Hand-Knotted Carpets.

Speaking on the occasion, Anshul Garg appreciated the Department’s efforts to highlight the artistry and skill of local craftsmen. He congratulated H&H for organizing the event and for their commendable initiative to showcase the rich and diverse cultural heritage of the region. He expressed his delight in meeting the talented artisans who have kept traditional crafts alive through their dedication and skill.

He informed that extensive efforts are underway for certification and Geographical Indication (GI) tagging to address challenges posed by machine-made goods and to safeguard the authenticity of local crafts.

He further congratulated the department for its successful efforts in taking the crafts of Kashmir to every corner of the country and to international platfor

He emphasized that the artisans of Kashmir form a vital part of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India—initiatives strongly advocated by the Prime Minister. The centuries-old cottage industry of Kashmir continues to thrive, with women playing a significant role, thereby contributing to women’s empowerment and socio-economic growth.

Highlighting various government schemes and initiatives such as the establishment of craft villages, he assured full support from the administration for the promotion and preservation of traditional crafts.

He urged that the ongoing campaign be further strengthened to bring the “golden hands” behind Kashmir’s exquisite crafts into greater public focus.

“Know Your Artisan introduces a new set of famed artisans and provides them with a platform to promote their niche products,” he remarked.

As part of the event, 10 artisan stalls and dedicated ‘Try Your Hands’ corners were set up, offering visitors the opportunity to witness live demonstrations and participate in hands-on experiences.

Later, the Divisional Commissioner felicitated the participating artisans during an Award Ceremony, which was attended by Director, Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir, Mussrat Islam, along with senior officers of the department.

“Know Your Artisan” series continues to serve as a unique bridge between artisans and admirers of Kashmiri handicrafts, reaffirming the region’s commitment to preserving and promoting its centuries-old artistic legacy.
