Srinagar: The annual Urs of Hazrat Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani (RA), popularly known as Sheikh-ul-Alam or Alamdar-e-Kashmir, commenced on Saturday at the revered Charar-i-Sharief shrine in central Kashmir with the traditional Poshak Bandi ceremony. Hundreds of devotees gathered at the shrine to offer prayers and seek blessings.
The Poshak Bandi ritual, which involves the ceremonial changing of the cloth covering the saint’s grave, marks the start of the Urs celebrations and holds deep spiritual significance for followers across the Valley. The new cloth, intricately embroidered with religious calligraphy, was draped over the grave by shrine caretakers as a gesture of reverence and renewal of faith.
Devotees from different parts of Jammu and Kashmir participated in the ceremony, reciting verses and offering special prayers. The shrine complex reverberated with devotional chants, creating an atmosphere of spiritual fervour. “Being here at Charar-i-Sharief during the Urs fills my heart with peace and devotion. Sheikh-ul-Alam’s teachings continue to guide us,” said one devotee. Another remarked, “Attending the Urs every year reminds me of the values of love and unity that Sheikh-ul-Alam (RA) taught. It’s a moment of spiritual connection for our entire family.”
The Urs of Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani (RA) is among the most significant spiritual events in Kashmir’s religious calendar. Known for his teachings of peace, tolerance, and harmony, Sheikh-ul-Alam (RA) continues to inspire generations across the region.
The government had earlier announced a provincial holiday on Monday, October 20, on account of the annual Urs. The Urs will be observed on Monday, featuring Khatamat-ul-Maazamat, with special prayers being offered at the shrine throughout the day.
