The initiative focused on increasing awareness of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among the Gujjar and Bakerwal communities, specifically addressing diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory disorders, cancers, and PCOD. Led by Dr. Faisal Ali, a Senior Research Scientist from DST-PURSE, the team included Dr. Tabassum from the Centre for Ayush Science, Dr. Sumaira from DST-PURSE, and students from the Medical Lab Technology program. They conducted screenings and diagnostic tests for various health issues, including diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, anaemia, and vitamin D deficiency. Dr. Faisal Ali noted a concerning prevalence of dyslipidaemia, hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and anaemia within the tribal population of Jammu and Kashmir. The team emphasized the importance of adopting healthy dietary habits and lifestyle changes to mitigate these health risks. Additionally, the program featured dietary counselling sessions for students at a local Government School, further promoting health education. Over 115 patients were screened during this outreach effort, receiving free medicines and diagnostic tests, highlighting the initiative’s commitment to improving community health.
