Srinagar | :  National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Srinagar Thursday inaugurated a three-day event titled “Craft Bazar – Artisan Awareness Workshop and Craft Demonstration” at the University of Kashmir.

The event was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor of University of Kashmir, Prof. Nilofer Khan, Registrar University of Kashmir Syed Azhar, Joint Director NIFT Srinagar, faculty members, students and several dignitaries from both institutions.

In her inaugural address, Vice-Chancellor lauded the efforts of NIFT Srinagar in organizing such a meaningful event, describing the craftsmanship of Kashmiri artisans as having “no match in the world.” She appreciated NIFT Srinagar for creating a platform that celebrates and preserves Kashmir’s rich craft heritage through awareness, education, and innovation.

Prof. Khan requested the management team of NIFT Srinagar to collaborate with the University of Kashmir to jointly provide every possible platform and support for artisans. She emphasized that the University of Kashmir is fully committed to collaborating with NIFT in initiatives that promote the region’s crafts and artisans.

She further announced that the University would take initiatives to explore how exhibitions could be organized in different parts of the country to showcase the artistic excellence of Kashmiri crafts.

Prof. Khan urged NIFT Srinagar to help the University in setting up stalls and exhibitions during major festivals such as Eid and other cultural occasions, enabling artisans to market their work directly and gain economic empowerment.

The “Craft Bazar” features an array of traditional Kashmiri crafts including Kani, Pashmina, Tweed, Willow Wicker, Copperware and Sozni embroidery, among others. The event is part of NIFT’s celebration of 40 years of excellence in fashion education and craft innovation.

The three-day programme includes artisan awareness workshops, live craft demonstrations, and exhibitions that highlight NIFT Srinagar’s ongoing commitment to fostering sustainable design practices, skill development, and artisan engagement.
