Srinagar | : The Department of Law at the University of Kashmir, in collaboration with the Department of Legal Metrology on Wednesday organized a Mega Awareness Programme focused on Legal Metrology, GST Revision, and Consumer Protection at the Main Campus.
The initiative aimed to enhance understanding of legal metrology standards, inform participants about GST 2.0 revisions, promote compliance among traders, and empower consumers through legal awareness. The day-long event included interactive sessions, expert lectures, and discussions featuring officials from the Department of Legal Metrology, GST experts, legal professionals, and academicians. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan emphasized the importance of such initiatives in connecting academic knowledge with public policy, highlighting their role in fostering civic responsibility and informed economic choices among students and citizens. Saurabh Bhagat, Commissioner/Secretary of the Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, stressed the necessity of consumer rights awareness and market regulations in an evolving marketplace, asserting that awareness is crucial for an empowered society. Registrar Prof. Naseer Iqbal noted the role of academic institutions in bridging policy and public understanding through collaborative efforts. Discussions also addressed challenges in the digital economy, including online payments and consumer redressal mechanisms, led by Owais Ahmad, Director FCS&CA KashmirRajinder Singh Tara, Controller of Legal Metrology, provided an overview of the department’s regulatory functions, while Shabir Ahmad Mir highlighted the implementation of GST reforms and key provisions of the Legal Metrology Act. Prof. Shahnaz, Dean and Head of the School of Law, underscored the significance of legal literacy in enhancing consumer protection and promoting responsible business practices.
