Awantipora | : The two-day International Conference on “Mapping the Future of Sustainable Landscapes: Geospatial Innovations for People, Places, and Practices” concluded on Friday at the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) with a valedictory session.
Organized by the Department of Land and Geomatics Engineering in collaboration with the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS), the conference gathered scientists, academicians, policymakers, and professionals from India and abroad to discuss the role of geospatial technologies in achieving sustainable development goals. Vice Chancellor Prof. Shakil A. Romshoo praised the department for aligning the event with IUST’s vision of promoting scientific and technological innovations. He highlighted the importance of geospatial tools in understanding climate impacts and managing resources in sensitive ecosystems, particularly in the Himalayas, and advocated for their integration into policy and planning. Prof. Anjana Vyas, Chair of ICWG V/IV, ISPRS, emphasized the need for integrating geospatial data, remote sensing, and participatory mapping to foster resilient and inclusive landscape planning. Dr. Salvatore Amaduzzi from the University of Udine delivered a special address focusing on advancements in geospatial technologies and their applications in landscape management, environmental monitoring, and precision agriculture, underscoring the significance of global cooperation in research and capacity building. Prof. Abdul Wahid, Registrar of IUST, acknowledged the organizing committee’s efforts and the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration for regional scientific advancement. The conference also featured an award ceremony recognizing outstanding research papers and technical presentations, with Dr. Tariq Abdullah, Head of the Department of Geomatics, proposing a vote of thanks to all participants, partners, and sponsors for their contributions to the event’s success.
