Leh, Srinagar : The administration of the Union Territory of Ladakh has established an advisory board to oversee detention laws, including the National Security Act (NSA), following the detention of environmentalist and educationist Sonam Wangchuk.
The board was formed under the Ladakh Public Safety Act, 1978, the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1988, and the Prevention of Black Marketing and Maintenance of Supplies of Essential Commodities Act, 1980. The board was constituted in consultation with the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, with Justice M. K. Hanjura appointed as chairperson, alongside Manoj Parihar and Spalzes Angmo as members. The government has mandated that this advisory board will also serve as the advisory board for the NSA. The primary function of the advisory board is to assess whether there is sufficient cause for an individual’s detention. If the board concludes that there is insufficient cause, the government is obligated to revoke the detention order and facilitate the immediate release of the individual concerned.
