Awantipora | : The Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) on Thursday concluded a two-day Training and Capacity Building Workshop on “Earthquake Risk Mitigation and Management” on September 24–25.

Organized by the Centre for Disaster Risk Reduction (CDRR) in collaboration with various departments, the workshop aimed to address the significant challenges posed by earthquake risks in the multi-hazard prone Himalayan region of Jammu & Kashmir. Participants included academics, government officials, engineers, and students, with attendees from District Disaster Management Authorities and other relevant organizations receiving certificates for their participation. The workshop featured a range of expert speakers, including Prof. Harsh K. Gupta, Prof. Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, and Dr. Saurabh Shiradhonkar, who provided valuable insights into earthquake risk reduction and management. The sessions covered critical topics such as developing an earthquake-resilient society, traditional architecture of Kashmir, and seismic vulnerability in the region. Additionally, practical sessions on micro-seismic zonation and rapid visual screening of buildings were conducted, alongside group brainstorming exercises to foster collaborative problem-solving. The inaugural session highlighted the region’s seismic vulnerabilities, with Prof. Gupta emphasizing the need for effective disaster risk reduction strategies. Vice Chancellor Prof. Romshoo underscored the importance of earthquake risk mitigation, while Guest of Honour Prof. Muzaffar Ahmad called for stronger disaster risk reduction policies and improved early warning systems. The workshop concluded with a valedictory session led by Dr. Aabid Hussain Shalla, who summarized the proceedings and outcomes of the event, reinforcing the commitment to enhancing earthquake preparedness in the region.
