Brief session likely to begin in 3rd or 4th week
Srinagar : The cabinet, led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, is scheduled to meet on Tuesday to finalize recommendations for the Lieutenant Governor regarding the convening of the autumn session of the assembly.
The session is anticipated to commence between October 20 and 27, taking into account the Diwali celebrations. According to the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act of 2019, there should not be a gap exceeding six months between assembly sessions, necessitating the next session to occur by October 28, following the last sitting on April 29. Key issues expected to dominate the upcoming assembly proceedings include discussions on statehood and reservation policies. In the previous session, three resolutions concerning statehood were not addressed due to disruptions caused by the National Conference, which protested the rejection of an adjournment motion related to the Waqf (amendment) bill-2025. Additionally, the topic of reservation has been a recurring point of contention, with PC president Sajad Gani Lone challenging the government on this matter. The assembly may also revisit the detention and assault of MLA Doda Mehraj, which was a significant issue during the last budget session.
