Srinagar, Sep 22,: The Jammu and Kashmir cabinet, headed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, is scheduled to meet on Tuesday to finalise a recommendation to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha for convening the autumn session of the Assembly. The meeting, according to officials, will begin at 10:00 AM.
Sources said that the government is under legal obligation to summon the next session before the end of October. As per the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, the gap between two sessions cannot exceed six months. The last sitting of the previous session was held on April 29, which means the autumn session must be convened by October 28 at the latest.
“The Lieutenant Governor shall, from time to time, summon the Legislative Assembly to meet at such time and place as he thinks fit, but six months shall not intervene between its last sitting in one session and the date appointed for its first sitting in the next session,” reads the Act.
Political observers say that the forthcoming session is likely to be politically charged, with contentious issues expected to dominate the proceedings. The demand for restoration of statehood is anticipated to return to the centre stage after three resolutions on the matter lapsed during the last session. The collapse occurred after disruptions by National Conference legislators who had protested against the rejection of their adjournment motion on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
Reservation is another issue set to spark fierce debate. In the previous session, People’s Conference President and Handwara MLA Sajad Gani Lone repeatedly confronted the government over its reservation policy. His interventions triggered heated exchanges that highlighted deep divisions across party lines.
The detention and alleged assault of Doda MLA Mehraj Malik during the last budget session is also expected to surface in the House. The incident drew sharp criticism from opposition parties at the time, and legislators are likely to demand accountability and assurances against recurrence.
