Srinagar | : Police on Friday said that it has foiled major drug smuggling attempt by seizing huge quantity of poppy straw in Anantnag & Sopore besides arresting three supects in separate operations.
In a statement issued here on Friday Police said that in Anantnaga police team from Police Station Bijbehara during naka at DoniporaBijbehara intercepted a vehicle (Tata Mobile) bearing registration no JK21A-3990 with two suspects on board identified as Sunil Kumar S/o Dharam Pal R/o Gandhi Camp, Jalandhar, Punjab and Boby S/o Balbir Das R/o Tilak Nagar, Jalandhar, Punjab who were arrested. Police in its statement further said during search, 136.3 Kgs (approximately) of poppy straw-like substance was recovered from the said vehicle which was seized.
Stating that in a similar action in Sopore, a police party during naka checking at Sofi Hamam Road Tarzoo, intercepted a load carrier bearing registration no JK04B-9881 while it was on its way from Nigli towards Chankhan following which the driver identified as Javaid Ahmad Dar S/o Gh. Mohi-ud-Din Dar R/o Chankhan Sopore was arrested on the spot Police in its statement further said that during search, 54 kgs of poppy straw were recovered from the said vehicle and thereafter the accused was shifted to police station where he remains in custody and the vehicle used in the commission of crime was also seized.
Police in its statement further said that cases under relevant sections of law were registered at respective police stations besides initiating further investigations to identify the supply chain and network behind this consignment.
In the concluding para of its above quoted statement police reiterated its commitment to zero-tolerance policy against drug peddling and trafficking, appealing people therein to remain vigilant and cooperate by sharing timely information .
