Srinagar | : The University of Kashmir (KU) on Thursday held a workshop titled “Intellectual Property Rights: Commercialization and Licensing of Patents,” highlighting its commitment to innovation and the protection of intellectual assets.

The initiative comes at a time when the importance of patenting and intellectual property (IP) in driving economic growth is increasingly recognized both nationally and globally. The workshop, organized by the Directorate of Internal Quality Assurance (DIQA), NewGen IEDC, and the IPR Cell, aimed to bring together innovators, researchers, and entrepreneurs to discuss the patent filing process, licensing frameworks, and successful commercialization strategies. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan emphasized the university’s progress in securing patents, aligning with KU’s vision to foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. She noted that in today’s knowledge-driven economy, protecting innovations through patenting and licensing is essential for national development and empowering youth to turn ideas into viable businesses. Dean of Research Prof. Mohammad Sultan Bhat highlighted the importance of such workshops in raising awareness among faculty and scholars about the commercialization processes, which is crucial for translating research into real-world applications. Registrar Prof. Naseer Iqbal reiterated the university’s dedication to equipping students and faculty with the necessary skills for effective technology transfer, focusing on collaboration with industry partners for patent licensing. Director DIQA Prof. Manzoor Ahmad Shah explained that the workshop aimed to combine theoretical knowledge with practical insights into patent filing, claims drafting, and commercialization strategies. As a testament to KU’s achievements, certificates were awarded to faculty and researchers who successfully secured patents, showcasing the university’s role in advancing technology-driven solutions. The technical sessions featured guidance from experts Ms. Kiran from IIT Delhi and Dr. Gauri Gargate from IIT Kharagpur, who provided participants with case studies and practical exercises on patent claims and commercialization strategies.
