DC Kupwara flags-off fish farmers for training, exposure visit under ATMA scheme

Kupwara: Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kupwara, Shrikant Suse, Tuesday flagged off a group of fish farmers from DC Office Complex Kupwara, for a one-day training-cum-exposure visit under the Agriculture Training Management Agency (ATMA) scheme 2025-26.
During the interaction, DC appreciated the department’s initiatives and assured farmers of full support in adopting modern methods of fish farming.
He emphasized that fisheries hold vast potential for employment generation and income enhancement, particularly for educated youth, and stressed on the need to modernize the sector so that more people are attracted towards it.
On the occasion, Assistant Director Fisheries, Dr. Salman Rauoof Chalkoo, informed that scientific fish farming in the district is being strengthened through biofloc and recirculatory aquaculture systems (RAS). He said such technologies will help in better land and water use, raise productivity, and boost the incomes of farmers.
He also noted that similar training programmes have already led to significant growth in the trout sector, increasing productivity from 250 kgs to 850 kgs in a 50 CUM space.
