Srinagar: District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Srinagar, Saturday organized a comprehensive legal awareness programme at Central Jail Srinagar as part of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC) campaign in jails across India.
The initiative aimed to educate inmates about the process and availability of filing Special Leave Petitions (SLPs) through legal aid, ensuring that justice remains accessible to all.
The programme was held under the chairmanship of Tasleem Arief, Principal District and Sessions Judge, Srinagar, and was conducted under the guidance of Sajad Ur Rehman, Sub-Judge/Secretary, DLSA Srinagar.
During the session, Panel Lawyer, DLSA Srinagar, addressed the inmates and emphasized the importance of understanding the procedure for filing SLPs before the Hon’ble Supreme Court.
He encouraged inmates to make use of the legal aid services available to them and highlighted how the SCLSC campaign is designed to support individuals in navigating the legal system effectively.
Assistant Legal Aid Defense Counsel (LADC), DLSA Srinagar, also spoke at the event, focusing on the significance of legal literacy and the role of SLPs in ensuring access to justice.
She further raised awareness about caste-based discrimination, referencing the landmark judgment passed by the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in Writ Petition (Civil) No. 1404 of 2023 titled Sukanya Shantha vs. Union of India & Others. The judgment reinforces the constitutional mandate to eliminate caste-based discrimination and affirms the judiciary’s commitment to protecting fundamental rights.
This initiative by DLSA Srinagar reflects a strong commitment to bridging the gap between legal institutions and incarcerated individuals, promoting awareness, equality, and empowerment within the prison system
