“Time For PM Modi, HM Shah To Keep Promise On Statehood”
Chennai: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday emphasized the need for the elected government in Jammu and Kashmir to be empowered in line with the people’s aspirations.
Addressing a press conference in Srinagar Chief Minister Abdullah called upon the central government to fulfill the promise of restoring statehood, as previously stated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. Abdullah asserted that his administration has consistently advocated for the restoration of statehood and has not compromised on this mandate. During a news conference in Chennai, he expressed disappointment over the delay in restoring statehood, highlighting that law and order should not fall under the elected government’s responsibilities. He reiterated the importance of keeping the promise made by the central government regarding full statehood for Jammu and Kashmir. In response to security concerns following ‘Operation Sindoor,’ Abdullah mentioned that a comprehensive security audit of tourist destinations has been conducted, with most locations now reopened for tourism while ensuring necessary precautions are in place. He also criticized the detention of legislator Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act, describing it as an excessive use of force against an elected representative and calling for his release. Regarding Prime Minister Modi’s recent visit to Manipur, Abdullah welcomed the gesture, noting the importance of restoring peace in the region. He also discussed efforts to enhance connections between South Indian states and Jammu and Kashmir, aiming to increase tourism from Tamil Nadu. Abdullah expressed appreciation for the support from the DMK and maintained a positive relationship with Chief Minister MK Stalin. He also addressed concerns about the Election Commission’s credibility in light of dissatisfaction in Bihar, emphasizing the need for the commission to uphold its independence and impartiality.
