Schools Set To Reopen, Gatherings Capped at 5”, Says DC, “Situation Under Control”, Says SSP
Doda: Markets in Doda District and other major towns reopened for six hours on Saturday following a temporary relaxation of restrictions imposed after the detention of MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA).
Talking to reporters Deputy Commissioner Harvinder Singh said that the district administration is easing restrictions in phases to maintain law and order, while gatherings of more than five to six people remain prohibited. Residents are advised to venture out only for essential needs. To address supply and transport issues, district officials engaged with civil society representatives, transport unions, and market associations. Singh noted that many supply disruptions were linked to closures on the National Highway in Udhampur, and efforts are underway to restore supply lines and facilitate monitored vehicle movement. Markets in Thatri and Bhadarwah subdivisions are operational, with further reviews planned for lifting restrictions in other areas. Regarding schools, inspections are ongoing to assess damage from heavy rains, and safety certificates are required for reopening. This process is expected to conclude by Monday, allowing students to resume classes. Singh also cautioned against misinformation, emphasizing that Doda remains calm and residents are cooperating with authorities. Senior Superintendent of Police Sandeep Mehta confirmed that restrictions on interior markets would be relaxed, although the ban on gatherings would persist in other areas. He reported no untoward incidents since Friday. Curfews and mobile internet suspensions were enacted earlier in the week following protests related to Malik’s detention and transfer to Kathua Jail. Authorities will continue to assess internet connectivity in the district, planning to restore services in phases based on the situation.
